Combination Drug Therapy For Hypertension

Half the people with stage I or II high blood pressure can control their blood pressure with one drug. If one drug isn't effective, the physician increases the dosage if there are no side effects. Other alternatives are:

1. Trying a different drug
2. Adding one more drug to the medication you are already taking (i.e., combination treatment).

Combination drug therapy is common nowadays and it is very beneficial. By using a combination of two or more drugs doctors can increase from 50 percent to 80 percent the number of people who respond positively to high blood pressure medication. An advantage of combination therapy is that we generally take smaller doses of each drug. This reduces the risk of side effects from the medication.

When using combination therapy, a physician looks for medications that enhance each other's effectiveness or reduce each other's side effects. A diuretic, for example, can enhance the effectiveness of beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and AG II Receptor Antagonist.

Working in combination

It is common for two drugs to be mixed together into the same tablet or capsule. Some examples of high BP medications in which two drugs are combined into one are listed here.
