These are comparatively new drugs designed for the treatment of hypertension. These drugs block the action of Angiotensin II (ACE inhibitors block the formation of Angiotensin I). These Angiotensin II receptor blockers don't increase the bradykinin unlike ACE inhibitors. These drugs don't produce a dry cough.

Only a few AG II Receptor Blockers are available in the market. Several brands are waiting for the approval from the food and drug administration.

Irbesartan
Losartan Potassium (Alsartan, Zaart, Repace, Angizaar)
Valsartan

Side Effects

Side effects are negligible but some reported side effects are nasal congestion, back and leg pain, diarrhoea, insomnia, indigestion.

Contraindications

The contraindications are the same as that for ACE-inhibitors, i.e., kidney disease and pregnancy.
